How to Choose a Web Designer in Kerala — 8 Questions to Ask
By Calicut Web Designers · 21 July 2025
Choosing the wrong web designer in Kerala can cost you time, money, and lost business. We’ve heard horror stories from clients who paid upfront, waited months, and never got a working website.
Here are 8 questions to ask before hiring any web designer in Kerala.
1. “Can I see live examples of websites you’ve built?”
Portfolio screenshots are easy to fake or steal. Ask for live URLs that you can visit right now.
When you visit those websites, check:
- Does it load on your mobile?
- Does it look professional?
- Is it actually live and working?
Any legitimate web designer in Kerala should have at least 5–10 live websites they’ve built.
2. “Will the domain be registered in my name?”
This is critical. The domain name is your digital property. If a web designer registers it in their own name, they own your website address.
Ask: “Will the domain be registered in my name, with my email as the admin contact?”
The answer should be yes. If they hesitate or say “we manage it for you,” that’s a red flag.
3. “Who handles hosting, and what happens if I want to leave?”
Your website files should be stored on hosting that you pay for directly, or on hosting managed by the agency with your account credentials.
Ask: “If I want to move to a different company in 2 years, can I take my website with me?”
A professional agency will say yes. A shady one will make it difficult.
4. “What does your maintenance plan include?”
Websites need updates, backups, and security patches. Ask specifically:
- How often are backups taken?
- Who do I contact if the website goes down?
- What’s the response time?
- What’s included in the annual maintenance fee?
At Calicut Web Designers, our ₹2,500/year renewal covers hosting, SSL, domain, and minor content updates — clearly stated upfront.
5. “Do you handle SEO, or just design?”
Design and SEO are different skills. A beautiful website that nobody finds is a waste of money.
Ask: “Does the website you build come with on-page SEO? What specifically do you include?”
Expected answer: meta titles, meta descriptions, schema markup, fast loading, mobile optimization, and Google Business Profile setup.
6. “What is the exact timeline and payment structure?”
Get this in writing:
- When does work start?
- What are the milestones?
- When is final delivery?
- What’s the payment schedule?
Standard industry practice: 50% upfront, 50% on delivery. Any demand for 100% upfront is a red flag.
7. “What if I’m not happy with the design?”
Ask how many revision rounds are included. A standard contract includes 2–3 rounds of revisions on the design before development starts.
If they say “unlimited revisions” — great, but get it in writing. If they say “you get what you get” — walk away.
8. “Can I update my own content later?”
After the website is built, you’ll need to update your content — change a phone number, add a new service, upload a photo. Ask:
- Will I be trained on how to update my website?
- Is there a cost for minor content updates?
- What’s the process for requesting changes?
Red Flags: Walk Away If You See These
- No written contract
- Demands full payment before starting
- Domain registered in their name
- No live portfolio examples
- Promises guaranteed #1 Google ranking in 24 hours
- Disappears for days when you message on WhatsApp
Green Flags: Signs of a Professional Agency
- Written project agreement
- Fixed price with clear scope
- Live portfolio websites
- Local presence (you can meet in person)
- Responsive on WhatsApp
- Can explain SEO and hosting in plain language
- Post-launch support included
